KILLYBEGS IMMERSED PIER LEGS
Project Description
The application of ZINGA on the pier legs at Killybegs Harbour was done in the summer of 2000.
The customer, the Irish Department of Marine and Natural Resources, and the contractor, SAR Marine & General, waited a full year before giving any official comment on the performance of the ZINGA coating.
Based on regular controls, they confirmed that the ZINGA is performing very well.
BANGOR PIER – IMMERSED PILES – IRELAND
Country: IRELAND
Project Description
ZINGA was applied on immersed piles of a pier in the Bangor
harbour. The piles were first UHP water-blasted and then gritblasted to give the correct surface profile. Then approx.
200 µm of ZINGA was applied in 4 coats by brush.
The work was executed by the contracting company
SAR Marine and General in November 2000.
Dublin Steel Home
Country: IRELAND
Project Description
This unique house was built in the suburb of Killiney in Dublin, and it overlooks the harbour. The canopies and top roof panelling are all coated with the Zinga system.
The contractors were advised to zinganise and paint all of the window frames before the glass was installed, as nothing could be done once the glass was in place.
The house has constant salt-air exposure from the sea.
Costing just over €5 million to build, and the glass alone cost €2 million due to curved sections being manufactured.
There is also interior steelwork that protrudes through to the outside, and supporting beams that are covered in timber.
In this way all of the steelwork was coated with Zinga and no cathodic/anodic areas are present anywhere in the house.
DUBLIN Irish Rail 1919 Turntable
Country: IRELAND
Built at the Inchicore main rail yards in 1919 immediately after end of WW1 for the Great Southern and Western Railway (GSWR), this railway turntable was in a sad state and the current owners IRISH RAIL decided to restore it to coincide with its 100 year anniversary.
The turntable was mounted on a circular steel track at the main works and its purpose was to turn the train around facing the opposite direction in situ… all by only a handful of men. This was possible due to the precise balancing of the structure.
Kilkenny based Total Highway Maintenance won the contract to carry out the restoration.
To restore the turntable, the entire piece had to be shot blasted to SAE 2.5. Following blasting, ZINGA was applied throughout to 60 – 80 micron DFT.
Later two coats of ZINGA ALU ZM were applied to provide a nice silvery finish.
To complete the project, walkways were fabricated and installed on both sides of the turntable.
All going well, that turntable should be around in 2119
OFFALY Electricity Generating Ireland
Country: IRELAND
High volumes of steam coming from peat being dried was resulting in a lot of corrosion of steel purlins and the roof in the drying sheds.
Replacement purlins were shot blasted and coated with ZINGA 60-80 DFT.
To finish, a mist coat plus wet coat of ZINGA TARFREE was applied to complete the anti-corrosion for this project.
DUBLIN Apartment Block
Country: IRELAND
Project Description:
Exclusive Apartment situated in Dublin’s trendy docklands.
Project called for several hundred fabricated steel posts which were designed to accommodate glass sections all around the perimeter of the building.
The posts were manufactured by Kilkenny company CDS Architectural Metalworks Limited.
They were shot blasted to SAE 2.5 by specialists Crowley Surface Coatings Ltd also based in Kilkenny.
ZINGA was applied by airless spray @ max 90 DFT.
ZINGACERAM was then applied to seal the ZINGA.
Finally two coats of PU 2k finish to customers spec were applied.
The finished project was very well received.
View of the first stages of building to illustrate the quantity of steel involved.
MAYO SHELL PUMPING STATION
Country: IRELAND
This pumping station pumps gas from the Corrib Field onto the shore in Galway. The manifolds and other assorted pipe-work were delivered to site as new, uncoated steelwork and due to the proximity of the sea it was decided to galvanise all of the steel with Zinga.
When the work was completed, it was decided that the steelwork should have an aesthetic finish in a green colour, but the budget was very tight at this point. The contractors from Italy said that a three-coat system would be too expensive, so they were told to go ahead with a two-coat system whereby they applied Dupont 2K Polyurethane paint from a local supplier directly over the Zinga.
This was done and the finish was excellent, with a tough high-gloss finish for appearance and with a coat of Zinga that acts not only as a galvanising layer but also acts as an ‘earthing blanket’ whereby any local static electricity generated on hot dry days would be discharged into the ground from the zinc layer via a copper earthing spike in the ground.

“In Zinc We Trust for Fighting Rust”
Project Description
In an ideal world, repairing and driving vintage and
classic vehicles would all be about tinkering relaxingly on the
odd nut and bolt, rubbing a bit of polish on the paintwork and
thinking about where to drive it for a nice Sunday lunch. But, the
reality usually comes down to one thing, and that’s the constant
battle against rust. Whether you’re replacing rusted body panels,
removing surface rust or trying to keep rust from reappearing on
your restored pride and joy, it’s all about understanding how steel
reacts to moisture, and what you can do about it

400 lengths of 16 mm diameter bar had to be rolled and shaped into a complex curve to form a tunnel over which many young trees were trained, so that in 50 years when the zinc and steelwork had gone, the trees would have formed a perfect tunnel.
The blasters were relieved to know that the bars could all be blast-cleaned and coated while they were straight, and the rolling and bending could be done afterwards, as Zinga- coated steelwork (any size) can be post formed.
